Getting to celebrate Halloween this year with some wicked women, a spooky shoot and a hell of a lot of entrepreneurial talent made me feel like a child; foolish and ready for the witching season.
As I browsed over these haunting pictures by Michelle Terris, I started to wonder — what is it about witches that make us want to let down our hair, throw off our clothes, and meet them to dance naked in the forest? Because, I know I’m not alone on this… I’ve met some pretty amazing people in that forest 😉
But all silliness aside, I found a few traits in these spell binding goddesses that I undeniably swoon over.
A Strong Trust and Belief in Magic: Have you ever met those people in life who you just want to sit and talk to, braid their hair, stroke their beard, bare your soul to and run off to the forest to dance naked? Okay, I’m kidding with that last one. (Or am I?) But truthfully, I’ve been blessed to meet certain people in life that feel…different. They are beautiful — and not through their looks — but their energy, their vibe is so attractive and haunting in the best of ways. What I’ve found is many of these people have complete trust in the Universe, the magic of life, and let things flow to them — including you.
Ritual: As I grow older and self-care becomes a bigger part of my life, I realize more and more how important ritual is. Ritual gives us confidence, it is the root of our self-love; it shows ourselves and the world that we are important enough to set time aside to take part in things that make up who we are. In so many words, it brews empowerment. The damn witchiest brew of all.
A Strong Emphasis on Independence and Community: The witches I tend to love roll in two ways: they are confident, independent women. They are quite alright standing on their own two feet alone. They are extremely self-sufficient and a-okay going their own way. However, at the same time, they value community and completely embrace the power and beauty that happens when women unite. They understand that ritual and giving thanks to their higher powers is only multiplied when they all join together to hold hands, chant, and dance naked…okay, okay…enough.
Real & Raw: Pff, these witches are as real as it gets. They are strong in their values, they are happy with the people in their tribe of witches, and if you aren’t a of a similar creature or like-mindedness, they never seem to waste their time with pretense. You will know if a witch wants you to join their haven or not. We should only be so lucky…
The Moon is Their Best Friend: Maybe this is only me, but I think the moon is pretty damn cool. How crazy a species I feel when that big orb of light in the sky is hovering over me, reminding me of an entire other world, quite literally. How powerful I feel when I can see it in all it’s beauty, exposed, craters and all, unapologetically itself as it lights the entire night, summoning animalistic traits out of all of us. The fact that the moon is a witch’s guide, her shoulder to cry on, a symbol of commitment to their lifestyle and overall best friend makes me pretty envious.
Spells: Nina Simone, the coolest cat around, knew the strength and power behind spells. They are poetic bits of ancient wisdom, passed on from generation to generation, that hold power and magic because we believe they do. That’s as badass as it gets.
Their Garb: No matter which era a witch is from, her clothing is always on point. Pointed toe shoes. Loose, dark clothing. Spooky, buttoned up puritan wear. Wicked tights. They’ve been trendsetters and trail blazers since the day one and forever will be. Especially when they dance naked in the forest ;).
Happy haunting, my fiending, spell binding, magic making, wild women!
always with meraki,
